i've prodded some of the flowers and identified them from seed - like cornflowers and marigold but loads are just tiny black dots :( I've taken out the offending pen and left a trusty sharpie up there - i think the only thing i can do is to resow the ones i want for the hanging baskets and fingers crossed for the rest. it'll be surprise tomatoes this year.

on mon when linda was going home she just got in car and was going past Muska grass field next to my house when she saw a sparrowhawk eating a pigeon - they're usually so quick its hard to see them so she rang me to bring camera, cos she knew i'd love a chance at a shot ( still trying to get that pesky heron in flight - i've hundreds of bits of sky ones with an occasional wingtip...)anyway as i was coming on scooter she suddenly realised the poor pigeon was still alive - usually the sparrowhawk kills them instantly with a neck grab - sometimes they fly off with head and the body turns up in the garden - food for something else though a bit stomach churning first time you see it.she opened car and the hawk flew off and we put the poor pigeon in the polytunnel where the last one recovered - i've some 4ft x 8ft raised beds about 2 .5 ft high and we left in seed and water. its lost loads of feathers from back and side and was bleeding from beak and sides so i didn't hold out much hope to be honest but watching it being ripped to bits was something neither of us could do. if id been braver i'd have broken its neck for a quick death but i can't do that either - wimp :( well, to my surprise yesterday am it was sitting up quite perkily and had eaten some seed, so i took more last night. its wings are ok as it fluttered out of the bed so i had to catch it ( yeah - real fun trying to get close enough to pick it up and it kept flapping out of reach without me falling over)and put it back in the raised bed. there's tulips in there at the mo so its got lots of shady space to hide in. last pigeon took a few days then just flew out one day, but it was just starved - when i picked it up i could feel all its breastbones like a sharp knife edge - hope this one does as well. I'll probably moan when its eating my fruit and veg but...
we found an injured red leg pheasant last week, had been hit by car but i think it was internally injured, was very floppy and glazed eye, charles put it by the bird table where there was some seed but it was flat out couple hours later..gone next morning - food for fox or the feral cat i guess, though charles likes to think it had a miracle recovery and flew away - well its was nearly easter i guess! if its good enough for jesus its good enough for the red leg pheasant. I got a couple of pics of him yesterday pm as he was creeping up to birdtable - we put stuff on floor too though he has jumped up. i'd had a bit of leftover beef so he must have smelled t. you know the way cats crouch and slowly do that creeping up thing - thats how he was - ready to pounce on the roast beef before it escaped

first of my mystery seeds up - no idea yet what they are its from the group where i set toms, cucumber and chillies - could be chillies cos the other are mostly 2- 4 to a pot. it'll be like last year where i had a plant lost a label - anyone tried to tell dif between courgette, butternut squash, cucumber, melon or pumpkin when they're only a few leaves - what it was depended on where i planted it - lucky guess was not cuc or melon so could go outside - it was actually a courgette.

lady pheasant photo's today so far: Pheasants 1 jeannie 0 - but they usually come down in a group about fivish so i'll try then. i did spot one earlier on my way up garden but it whizzed through the trellis and by time i'd got through opening to that side she'd gone back the other and across the garden into woods...

had a busy pm yesterday - Charles came back from pub about 1.30 pm muttering a numberplate sequence. wrote it down quick then he said why - he'd passed the old lady's house ( the one that doesn't like me and argues about her being in the field next to her house) and two men were cutting down conifers - one asked him what todays date was ( well.. yesterdays) and asked him to fill in and sign a blank cheque alarm bells were already ringing as we know she has community gardeners ( the ones that threw all the prunings in muska field leading to the problem). I rang the police and explained what had happened and they were excellent - sent someone whilst they were still taking details from me - no good talking to Charles as he can't hear them - they'd never get an accurate description that way. They called round to check which house it was - you know how you know where someone lives but not the house name - and our "road" is about 2 miles long and no house numbers...next thing we knew was the nurse arrived - she does come 4 times a day so could have been scheduled visit - and there were 4 more police cars outside our house. got a call from my friend who lives 4 miles away to ask what's happening - her daughter was passing, saw cars and rang mum. amazing how news travels! a policelady did a door to door to see if anyone had leaflet advertising services or seen anything, she said they took things like this very seriously and they'd let us know the outcome. later they rang to say would charles make a statement. makes me so cross how easily old people get scammed - they could have written anything on that cheque and got away with thousands if charels hadn't come along just at the right moment.

doubt it Judie - she's 96 so pretty set in her waysone of her fence panels blew down in strong autumn winds a few years back - she was insistent that it was jay damaged it when he put the wire fence up round muska field... it was old and rotten - the next one was leaning on the wire fence and i'd propped it up with a spare post to stop it falling completely. she said her son had got some quotes and she wanted £1000 - yes thats right- a grand- off me to replace her fencing. i just kept saying look your fencing is rotten thats why it fell down and we've deliberately left a 3ft gap between fences so the horses don't lean on it or chew your plants but she was adamant. i had to say i didn't want to fall out with a neighbour so was walking away.
I'm just glad that Charles was in right place at right time to stop her and others getting ripped off. if he'd been a few mins later they'd have been cleared up and gone..onto the next poor person I guess

Here's our feral cat creeping up on the leftover roast beef before it escapes its blurry cos its via the conservatory window- open the door and he's off. he's been here as long as we have so he's at least 9 now and has fabulous glossy coat - he's big too. he's around most days seeing whats for supper on the bird table - fortunately he doesn't seem to want bird for tea - unless its cookedbut between him and the foxes they've seen off the rabbits who decimated the garden - we only have a few bunnies rather than the hundreds we did have which isn't great when you're trying to grow veg, they find a way through any defence, and we have very few mice and rats either - given we've a couple of acres and two more of woodland next door there must be loads of rats around but we rarely see any. we throw out all bones and skin from meat - even big lamb leg bones go, never a trace to be seen. Linda brings hers too now - they had turkey carcass from us both at xmas. i boil bones for soup for us then throw them out and by next morning they're gone - saves landfill and helps the animals. i put the dead pigeon last week by the hole in fence where the cat comes through - Linda was a bit but its a waste burying it when the cat will then kill something else.

about 4 years ago linda bought a leftover pack of bulbs from woolies for 10p about this time of year - i tucked them in the garden and though 1st year was a bit poor ( no surprise) this is them now.

Hi Jeannie your cat looks the spit image of our Thomas to the small flashes of white on him.
Thomas was rescued but not a feral cat. what a brilliant keeper of vermin and those daffodils are beautiful. wished I could grow thenm in the garden but the soil doesnt like them

jules - have you been before - did you know you can hire mobility scooters? it makes life so much easier - mines too big to go in car.
mind - they charge what i think is extortionate price - £50 for mon at 12 til fri about same time - and a £200 deposit. I can understand paying reasonable charge to cover their costs but this is making a profit from my disability. you have to book them in advance as they are very popular. but thats us isn't it - if we need it we need it despite the price. if i didn't hire it i couldn't go for the bike rides and stuff with the ids and someone else would have to take their time to push me. not fair on them though they don't mind - i'd rather be independent if i can.

Thanks Jeannie, I have a scooter booked and I agree about the cost and the deposit. We have been before but it was about 17 years ago and we went to Sherwood Forest. We stayed for 2 weeks though so it was too long but we had a good time. Cost a fortune though.

Taking a breather to see what's been occurring here
Judie has made me realise that I've been working way too hard (thanks for asking Judie, kind of you).

I've been managing Rob's artwork since January which has involved loads of photography, catalogue devising, email answering, supplies purchasing, web listing and exhibition planning. That as well as running my own business has made time for anything else very scarce.

I do keep peeping in now and then though to keep up with you all

So pleased it was onlythe workload Lorna, and its great to hear of Robs success, its quite right to say behind every great man is a great woman and you sure are pushing the right buttons to help him to succeed. really could do with some of your assistance myself, I just don't have much motivation for that side of things and so it shows
